International Commercial Mediation Competition

About the Competition

For the second year, the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition - Hong Kong, organised by the International Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong (“ICC-HK”) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Department of Justice, the latter promoter of the Mediation First initiatives. The Competition provides students opportunities to earn valuable skills in mediation and mediation advocacy, which are essential competencies in modern dispute resolution in an increasingly multi-cultural and global marketplace.

This year’s event follows the successful inaugural Competition last year, when 16 teams from 8 jurisdictions around the world competed. Once again, teams from local and regional universities, together with counterparts along the Belt & Road and beyond, are invited to join. The winning team will be funded to compete at the annual ICC Mediation Competition at the ICC Global Headquarters in Paris, France in February 2020 in its 15th edition, widely recognised as the world’s leading competition devoted to international commercial mediation.

University Teams of 2-4 students are invited to apply.
Professional Mediators are invited to apply to volunteer as judges and mediators.
Helpers are invited to volunteer and make the event a success.

Rules & Procedures

This Competition is based on the world-famous ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition Rules, allowing students to exhibit their mediation skills in realistic mock commercial disputes, developed by seasoned professional mediators.

Teams of 2-4 university students compete in a series of competition rounds. Competing teams represent two sides of a dispute, with members assuming the roles of Client and Counsel. A qualified professional mediates the dispute, whilst distinguished judges assess how well the teams have advanced their interests towards a settlement.
